Professional accomplishment I'm most proud of

My work with Mark Church’s Culture’s of Thinking cohort has been energizing and inspiring, and my students benefit from it on a daily basis. I’m also proud that I have had 60 hours of Orton-Gillingham coursework led by my wonderful Triad Academy colleagues. We are so fortunate to have access to so many talented, inspiring educators here at Summit!

Hardly anyone at Summit knows that

I used to be an animal caretaker at the Nature Science Center (now Kaleideum). I had lots of “unusual” responsibilities. For example, I once sat on a 25 foot long python so that it would hold still so that a scale could be removed from its eye.

A book, film, work of art, or piece of music I cannot imagine life without

I find myself re-reading Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. It appeals to my love of history and romance. Perhaps most of all, I love Austen's use of language. As one of my writing students said a few years ago, "Mrs. Moir is obsessed with Word Choice!". Indeed, I am!

I knew I wanted to work at Summit when

my professor at Salem College suggested I visit Summit and watch Tom Shaver teach math for a day. I did and I was hooked! Tom and so many other colleagues have inspired me and continue to inspire me on my professional journey.

My favorite project the students are working on this year

Our fourth grade curriculum is all about Freedom. We study Colonial America, the American Revolution, the framing of the Constitution, and the Underground Railroad and Civil War all through the lens of Freedom and what it means. We bring it all together with a Freedom Celebration in the spring. It is a very exciting and energizing undertaking. I learn new things and gain new inspiration from my students each year from this study.
