Summit turned in a gritty effort Wednesday afternoon against Cornerstone Charter, falling to the Cardinals 16-8. After Cornerstone jumped to an early 10-1 lead, the Eagles fought back with six runs in the bottom of the second to draw within three. Lily drove in two runners with her second hit of the game and Leila capped the rally with a three-run bomb to deep left field. From there, pitching and defense took over. Leila struck out seven Cornerstone batters and Maddie turned in a gold glove performance at shortstop, highlighted by a sensational catch and flip to Jess at second to complete a double play. Lauren made a sky-high catch in her debut and Reese played a solid game at first for the Eagles. The Eagles scored a run in the fourth to make the score 12-8, but Cornerstone pulled away late. Scoring for the Eagles today were Lily (2), Maddie, Leila, Quinn, Reese, Rae, and Sarah. The Eagles return to the diamond Friday against South Davie.
