The Lady Eagles welcomed the NW Guilford JV to the Athletic Center. The Eagles played against a very sizable and experienced squad from Northwest. The 1st quarter saw NW score in a variety of ways from deep and midrange exploiting the Eagle zone to take a lead in the first quarter by 7 and build it up to as much as 14 before the Eagles started hitting from the outside to close the half trailing 26-17 for a halftime score. The third quarter once again became a problem for Eagles as the lead grew to going into the fourth quarter to 37-19. At that point the Eagles mounted another fourth quarter surge getting as close as 39-34. Yet timely free throw shooting by Northwest kept the Eagles at bay to 42-32. The final score was achieved by an out bounds play that produced a dynamic three point shot by Emma to end the scoring. 42-35. The scoring totals Adelaide 14 Abby 6 Mary Claire and Isabella with 5 apiece Emma 3 and Allie 2. The Eagles play again January 22nd at FCDS. GO EAGLES!!!!!
The Lady Eagles travelled to High Point to play Wesleyan. The Trojans were a very big team towering over the inside players from Summit, yet the Eagles held their own against the big team. The inside players exuded the toughness of their leader on the floor Mary Claire. She decided early to accept the man to man defensive challenge and attacked the Wesleyan team to either score or setup her teammates with dribble penetration. The Eagles faced the man to man of Wesleyan and seized control of the game in the third quarter, producing the best third quarter of season on both ends of the floor holding Wesleyan to three points while scoring eleven. The third quarter had a highlight of Isabella attacking the rim with a behind the back dribble which led to a layup, the entire bench went crazy with that move. The final scoring opportunity of the night was symbolic of the team's effort. Mary Claire broke through the man pressure and threw a great diagonal pass to Abby for the final scoring play for the Eagles. The game was a true reflection of team play by the Eagles. Scoring totals Mary Claire 11 Adelaide 8 Isabella 6 Abby 4 Mary Price 2 Lily 2. The Eagles next welcome Northwest Guilford high school JV to the AC on Thursday.
The Lady Eagles welcomed N. Davie and hoped to avenge an earlier in the season but fell 41-29. The first quarter saw great defense by both teams and scoring was at a premium. Davie took the lead to end the first quarter and built on it in the second quarter to lead at the half 19-14. There is an old saying "sometimes you eat the bear and sometimes the bear eats you". That saying could explain a first time of the season, a scoreless third quarter for the Eagles. The Eagles had opportunities to score but the lid was on the basket and this time the "bear ate us". Davie extended the lead to as much as 21points and then a funny thing happened the Lady Eagles caught a little fire and began to play aggressive man to man defense and began mounting an impressive comeback that saw them score 15 points in the final quarter as Davie held the Eagles at bay by hitting timely free throws to close out the game. The Eagles fall to a season record of 5 wins and 7 losses. The Eagles enter the next couple of weeks trying to get on a run to finish the season a positive note. The scoring totals Adelaide had 13, Mary Claire 7 Isabella 4 Maddie 3 Mary Price 2.
The Lady Eagles travelled to High Point to play the SW Guilford High JV team Tuesday afternoon and won 48-19. The Lady Eagles played an enthusiastic and aggressive man to man defense to get their legs back after a long holiday break. The Lady Eagles also used an aggressive zone trap to speed up the Cowgirls and take their size advantage out of the game. The aggressive play was led by point guard Mary Claire and her defensive presence on the Cowgirls leading scorer. Also the rebounding of Mariella, Abby and Mary Price reduced the scoring opportunities of the opponents by gathering any miss and allowing our guards to push the pace of the game. The Lady Eagles also had nine of the twelve members scoring in this game. The scoring totals had Adelaide with 11, Isabella and Maddie with 7 apiece, Mary Claire 5 Mary Price 4 Mary Kathryne 3 and Leila Lilly and Abby with 2 apiece. The Lady Eagles host North Davie Thursday at 4:30.
