Library
The Library is the information hub of Summit School, an integral part of both teaching and learning. It is also a warm, welcoming environment, with cozy nooks by fireplaces for reading, a story pit for younger children, and breakout rooms for group study. Everything from the design of the furniture to the artwork hanging on the walls is designed to foster learning.
The library supports and enriches scholarship by providing a broad range of books and resources that meet the curricular and personal needs of our students. The goals of the Library program are twofold: to encourage a life-long passion for reading, and to help children to become wise, confident, and independent users and producers of information and media.
Through collaboration with classroom teachers and other specialists, our librarians work to enrich learning activities and integrate 21st Century information skills. Children in the Lower School visit the library each
week to choose free-reading books, listen to stories, browse magazines, and select appropriate information for well-designed introductory research projects. In the Upper School, students explore a variety of increasingly sophisticated print and digital information sources as they become more intellectually independent. They refine their selection, evaluation, and critical thinking and reading skills through work on class projects and individual research assignments.
The library holds more than 45,000 books and other resources. The Lower Library primarily serves grades K-3 and the Upper Library, grades 4-9. Computer labs, wireless internet, and study rooms are available in both the Lower and Upper Libraries. Professional resources and books for parents are located on the third floor. The library is open for student and parent use daily, before and after school, and weekly during the summer.
